Transportation & Mobility Questions to Ask
Getting from one place to another is part of the trip. If you use a wheelchair, power chair, scooter, or other mobility equipment, a few specific questions can help you know whether the transportation you've arranged will actually work for you.
You don't need to ask every question. Focus on the ones that apply to your equipment and your travel needs.
🚗 About the Vehicle
☐ What type of vehicle will be used?
☐ Is it equipped with a ramp or lift?
☐ Can I remain in my own mobility device during transportation?
☐ What are the vehicle's interior dimensions?
☐ What are the ramp or lift weight limits?
☐ What are the vehicle's weight limits?
☐ Does the stated weight limit include me and my mobility device together?
☐ Can my specific mobility device fit safely inside the vehicle?
☐ How will my mobility device be secured?
♿ About My Mobility Device
☐ Have I provided the make, model, dimensions, and weight of my mobility device when requested?
☐ Does the transportation provider have any restrictions on power wheelchairs or scooters?
☐ Are there battery requirements or restrictions?
☐ Does my equipment need to be folded, disassembled, or otherwise modified for transportation?
☐ If so, can I safely manage that?
☐ Will my mobility device remain with me throughout the journey?
☐ Where will it be stored if it cannot remain with me?
💙 About Transfers
This is one of the questions that deserves special attention.
☐ Will I be required to transfer out of my wheelchair or power chair?
☐ If so, what exactly will I be transferring into?
☐ Can I safely make that transfer?
☐ What assistance is available?
☐ Is a mechanical lift or hoist available if one is required?
☐ Who is responsible for providing that assistance or equipment?
☐ If I cannot transfer safely, what alternative is available?
Don't assume that being offered another wheelchair automatically solves the problem.
For some travelers, transferring to another mobility device may be difficult or impossible without appropriate assistance or equipment.
✈️ Airport Transportation
☐ How will I get from the airport to my hotel or destination?
☐ Can the vehicle accommodate my specific mobility device?
☐ What happens to my mobility equipment during the transfer?
☐ Will I be able to remain in my own device?
☐ If I have a connecting flight, what assistance will I need between gates?
☐ Where and when will my mobility equipment be returned to me?
🏨 Hotel & Destination Transfers
☐ Can the transportation accommodate my mobility device?
☐ Is the pickup/drop-off location accessible?
☐ Will I need to navigate steps, curbs, ramps, or uneven surfaces?
☐ Is assistance available with boarding and exiting the vehicle?
☐ Does the transportation provider have experience transporting power wheelchairs or scooters?
☐ What happens if the scheduled vehicle cannot accommodate my equipment?
🌎 Getting Around at My Destination
☐ How will I get to the places I want to visit?
☐ Are accessible taxis, shuttles, or private transportation available?
☐ Do they accommodate my specific mobility device?
☐ How far in advance should accessible transportation be reserved?
☐ Is accessible transportation available for the return trip?
☐ Are there backup options if the original transportation becomes unavailable?
📋 Before You Confirm
☐ Have I explained my specific mobility needs?
☐ Have I provided accurate information about my mobility device?
☐ Have I received specific answers, rather than simply “Yes, we're accessible”?
☐ Have I confirmed the important details with the actual transportation provider?
☐ Do I have important accessibility information in writing?
☐ Do I know what happens if the planned transportation cannot accommodate me?
☕ One Question Can Change the Conversation
Instead of asking:
> “Do you have accessible transportation?”
Try asking:
> “Can you tell me exactly how your transportation will accommodate me and my specific mobility device?”
That's a much more useful conversation.
Because accessible transportation isn't simply about having a ramp or lift.
It's about whether the entire arrangement works for the traveler.
Ask the questions.
Get the details.
Know what you're agreeing to.
