Planning Your Trip
A Great Trip Starts Before You Pack the Suitcase
Planning a trip can be exciting.
It can also feel like there are a million little details to figure out before you ever leave home.
Where are you going?
How are you getting there?
Where will you stay?
What will you do when you arrive?
And what happens if something doesn't go quite as planned?
The good news?
You don't have to figure it all out at once.
Good travel planning is about taking the big picture and breaking it into manageable pieces.
🧭 Start With the Trip You Want
Before jumping into prices, ships, hotels, or flights, think about the experience you're hoping to have.
Ask yourself:
Where do I want to go?
What do I want to experience?
Who am I traveling with?
What matters most to me about this trip?
Maybe it's relaxing by the water.
Maybe it's seeing someplace you've dreamed about visiting.
Maybe it's spending time with your family.
Maybe you simply want to get away and have someone else handle the details for a change.
There isn't a wrong answer.
Your trip should start with what matters to you.
💙 Think About What You Need
Once you know what kind of experience you're looking for, think about what will make the trip comfortable and manageable.
This might include:
Mobility needs
Transportation
Hotel accommodations
Walking or standing requirements
Rest periods
Dietary needs
Traveling with a caregiver or companion
Medical or mobility equipment
Activities you want to enjoy
Things you already know you need to avoid
These aren't reasons not to travel.
They're simply pieces of the planning puzzle.
The sooner we know what those pieces are, the easier it is to build a trip around them.
✈️ Look at the Whole Journey
It's easy to think only about the destination.
But your trip isn't just the place you're going.
Think about the entire journey:
Home → Airport → Transportation → Hotel → Destination → Activities → Transportation → Home
Every step is part of the travel experience.
A beautiful destination doesn't help much if getting there creates a problem you weren't prepared for.
That's why I like to look at the whole trip, rather than treating each part as a separate decision.
🧳 Don't Leave the Little Details Until the Last Minute
Some travel details are much easier to deal with when you have plenty of time.
Things like:
Passport or identification requirements
Flights and connections
Hotel arrangements
Transportation
Mobility equipment
Cruise documents
Excursions
Travel insurance
Special requests or accommodations
You don't have to obsess over every detail months in advance.
But knowing what needs attention—and when—can prevent that last-minute feeling of:
> “Oh no...I didn't think about that.” 😳
And yes, sometimes something will come up that you didn't expect.
That's travel.
The goal isn't to predict everything.
It's to be prepared for the things you can reasonably anticipate.
☕ Give Yourself Room to Ask Questions
This is where having a travel advisor can be especially helpful.
You don't have to know what every cruise line, hotel, transportation company, or destination offers.
You don't have to know which questions you're supposed to ask.
That's part of the planning process.
If you're unsure about something, ask.
If an answer doesn't make sense, ask again.
If something is important to you, don't assume.
Find out.
And when possible, get important details confirmed in writing.
🌎 Leave Room for the Good Stuff
Planning isn't just about avoiding problems.
It's also about making room for the things you want to experience.
Maybe you find an excursion you've always dreamed about.
Maybe you discover a little restaurant near your hotel.
Maybe you find a beautiful beach, scenic train ride, wildlife experience, or historic site.
Maybe your grandchildren are coming along and you find something everyone can enjoy.
Those discoveries are part of the fun.
Planning should give you confidence—not take away the excitement.
🐢 One Step at a Time
You don't have to plan the entire vacation in one sitting.
Start with the destination.
Then look at transportation.
Then lodging.
Then activities.
Then the details that matter most to you.
One step at a time.
Slow and steady works pretty well for this.
Just ask my turtle. 🐢
💙 Your Trip. Your Priorities. Your Plan.
There isn't one perfect way to travel.
There's the way that works best for you.
My job as a travel advisor is to help you sort through the choices, think through the details, and feel more prepared to make those decisions.
Because sometimes the hardest part of planning isn't choosing where to go.
It's knowing where to begin.
And you don't have to figure that part out alone.
Ready to start?
I've put together a companion resource with helpful questions to consider as you begin planning:
